Invictus
The wish to acquire more is admittedly a very natural and common thing; and when men succeed in this they are always praised rather than condemned. But when they lack the ability to do so and yet want to acquire more at all costs, they deserve condemnation for their mistakes. - Niccolo Machiavelli
Covenant Overview:
The Invictus is the landed aristocracy of the Damned. An elitist organization at its core, the Invictus teaches that power is everything and those who gain power deserve it most: those with the greatest skill, the greatest ambition, and overall, the greatest claim to leadership. The Invictus appeals far more to elder Kindred than to neonates, and the covenant believes that age and experience are worth far more than anything youth might offer. The so-called First Estate claims to have created most of the common titles and ranks in the modern nights, especially the title of Prince. The Invictus clearly thinks in terms of aristocracy, and like any aristocracy, it suffers in disorder. Therefore, the Invictus strives to maintain order among the Damned and seeks to uphold the laws of the Kindred to the fullest extent.
Covenant Philosophy:
If the Invictus is devoted to a single Philsophy, then it must be the notio that power amongst the kindred must remain in the hands of those most worthy to wield it. Kindred are violent, paranoid, and ambitious. If society is to have any hope of surviving these flaws in secrecy, someone has to be in charge. Of course ideally the Invictus believes in keeping as much power in its own hands as possible because they consider themselves most worthy to wield it.
Covenant Tenants:
The Invictus Must be Respected
The Invictus prefers to show the power that they have achieved as a sign of self respect as well as respect to one another. Making public shows of power helps to show others what they are up against, inspire neonates to flock to their banner, and shows a social convention in which a hiearchy is established.
Invictus tend to be very formal about hierarchy, coming up with titles, prestige, and subtle ways of conveying their achievements. They are ridged about the use of this hierarchy because they believe those in the positions and titles have earned the right to be respected by their peers.
Mortals Are Power
While all the covenants understand the need for the Masquerade, the Invictus focuses much of its effort not merely infiltrating but manipulating mortal society. In the covenant quest for political dominance, it is hard to ignore an opportunity in the humans around them. Most elder Kindred of all covenants wield some amount of influence in local affairs, but when one pictures a vampire at the heart of a web of influence, one probably pictures your average invictus.
Benefits:
Members of the Invictus benefit from their league of friends and the resources of the group as a whole. This allows players of Invictus characters to purchase the Herd, Mentor, Resources and Retainer Merits for substantially fewer experience points than players of other Kindred do.
